The amalgamation of former West Gippsland-La Trobe Football League club Wonthaggi Blues and Wonthaggi Rovers of the Alberton Football League could scarcely have elicited a more triumphant start as the new club, Wonthaggi Power, went top in both of its first two seasons. The 2007 season brought a third straight grand final appearance, but Yarram emerged victorious by 9 points.
Wonthaggi Rovers, which had been established in 1956, enjoyed senior premiership success in 1974, 1975, 1994 and 1995, while the Blues entered into the merger in a position of some strength having contested consecutive senior grand finals in 2001-2.
